There are few things that should be said about rank. First off it has no affect on gameplay except in the salary you receive every Friday. That said, most players earn their money through fighting, looting, crafting, etc and not on thei rank's salary. Rank is gives you little more than a feeling of self worth and accomplishment. That's no small deal, it's great if you can make LT and higher; a lot of players strive to get there. However if you derank to Ensign due to a loss it's ok; most combat pilots are only LTJG and LT and most considering the fact that past LT one loss seems to be enough to make you drop in rank. How rank is calculated remains a mystery. Many players, including the Japanese, have attempted to decipher this without success. It is a common joke to say that even the developers don't know anymore. Crafters will almost inevitably have a higher rank than you if you are a combat pilot. This is due not to any perceived superiority, but in that crafters in trucks and elecars suffer no loss if their vehicle is destroyed. This is where rank can be useful, if you are looking for a good crafter higher ranked ones generally can produce higher end suits more reliably. This is not a garuntee, however it is a good barometer to see if the suit you're looking for can be made. As far as combat is concerned rank means nothing when trying to gauge your opponent. A good rule of thumb is to assume he is always better than you. A LT in a Gundam charging at you may be only be a crafter with 0 kills and little in the way of combat skills, and a PO in Zaku II might be able to rip you a new one since he is a maxed player. So use caution. Aside from that rank is a nice little badge to wear and a better looking uniform, but if you're an Ensign who can't seem to get up there due to losses, worry not. It's only the skill points you should really worry about. Once you max out then worry about rank. Good Hunting.
